What is Habitat for Humanity?

Habitat builds simple, decent, secure homes. Each home has central heat & air conditioning, a stove, refrigerator, water heater, carpet and vinyl. The Partner Family participates in the design of their home by selecting the floor plan from approved plans, and the colors of vinyl siding, roofing shingles, walls, floor covering, etc. Each Partner Family also receives an allowance of $750 to spend on extras which they select.

Where are homes located?

Habitat builds homes all over Berkeley County. The Board of Directors decides the locations where homes will be built.

How does Habitat decide on home size?

The number of bedrooms in a Partner Family's home is determined by the Executive Director based on the composition (number, ages and sex) of the family. The size of a three bedroom home is approximately 1120 square feet while the four bedroom home is approximately 1288 square feet.

Is the house free?

No. Families pay for the house by "sweat equity"-working on it-and a monthly mortgage payment. Most Habitat mortgages are for twenty years with zero percent interest and equal the value of the land and materials in the house and an amount for administrative costs. The mortgage payment will also include taxes, termite treatment and insurance. For many Partner Families the payment is less than their current rent.
