What is Habitat for Humanity?
Habitat
builds simple, decent, secure homes. Each home has central heat & air
conditioning, a stove, refrigerator, water heater, carpet and vinyl. The
Partner Family participates in the design of their home by selecting the
floor plan from approved plans, and the colors of vinyl siding, roofing
shingles, walls, floor covering, etc. Each Partner Family also receives
an allowance of $750 to spend on extras which they select.
Where are homes located?
Habitat
builds homes all over Berkeley County. The Board of Directors decides
the locations where homes will be built.
How does Habitat decide on home size?
The
number of bedrooms in a Partner Family's home is determined by the
Executive Director based on the composition (number, ages and sex) of
the family. The size of a three bedroom home is approximately 1120
square feet while the four bedroom home is approximately 1288 square
feet.
Is the house free?
No.
Families pay for the house by "sweat equity"-working on it-and a monthly
mortgage payment. Most Habitat mortgages are for twenty years with zero
percent interest and equal the value of the land and materials in the
house and an amount for administrative costs. The mortgage payment will
also include taxes, termite treatment and insurance. For many Partner
Families the payment is less than their current rent.
What is Habitat for Humanity?
Berkeley
County Habitat for Humanity seeks to bring people together from all
walks of life to put their faith into action through a ministry of
building simple, decent secure, owner-occupied housing with our citizens
in need. The ministry is financed through private donations and by
utilizing volunteer labor. It is a nonprofit, ecumenical, Christian
housing ministry that seeks to eliminate substandard and inadequate
housing from Berkeley County by partnering with low-income families to
build adequate, affordable housing that is sold without profit or
interest.
Habitat
does not discriminate on any basis including race, sex, age, disability,
religion, marital status, national origin or because all or a portion of
a family's income is received from any public assistance program.
