Why Focus on the Wall Street Neighborhood
in Moncks Corner?
This Wall Street is in Moncks Corner, a bedroom community of Charleston, South Carolina. Moncks Corner’s population has increased by a third since 2010 and has the second highest growth rate in the state. This increase in population has put a strain on public services, schools, and affordable housing. The poverty rate for Moncks Corner, SC is 14.5% and is even higher in the Wall Street neighborhood of approximately 125 families
Since 2010, Habitat for Humanity has built relationships with these families. It began with understanding their gifts, dreams and concerns. Asking what do they believe will transform the neighborhood and enhance their quality of life? Habitat is not the architect of revitalization. Instead, we tailor our work to the aspirations and dreams of residents who take on leadership roles in their community’s renewal. By ceding the leadership role to residents, Habitat ensures that the work will continue after we move to another neighborhood.
Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County has invested over one million dollars in the Wall Street neighborhood by building fourteen new Energy-Star homes. Additional affordable homes are planned for this neighborhood in the future.
