HABITAT HOMEOWNERS ARE SELECTED BASED ON THREE PRINCIPLES:
Need For Decent Housing in Berkeley County:
First priority will be given to families with the greatest need (examples include overcrowded, unsafe, unsanitary, cost burden).
Ability To Pay:
There must be enough consistent household income to pay the monthly mortgage, utility bills such as water and electricity, and other debts (credit cards, car payments, etc), and still have sufficient money left for family support needs such as food and clothing.
Applicants should meet the following HFHBC Income Guidelines (based on the Department of Housing and Urban Development):
HUD 2016 30-60% AMI Income Guidelines
Willingness to Partner:
Families must be willing to complete a minimum of 350 hours (per adult) of “sweat equity” on the construction of their home and other families’ homes. In addition, selected families will be required to attend homeownership education classes.
