Golfing Fore! a Better Future in 2026

Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County proudly hosted the 12th Annual Fore! a Better Future Golf Tournament on Monday, April 20th, at Berkeley Country Club. The spring tournament brought together generous sponsors, teams, and community partners for a meaningful day on the course in support of affordable homeownership in Berkeley County.

Golfers checked in at 9 AM before a 10 AM shotgun start, enjoying 18 holes of golf, a Closest to the Pin contest, and an exciting raffle filled with donated items. Food, snacks, and beverages were provided throughout the day. Funds raised during the tournament directly support Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County as we continue building safe, affordable homes for hardworking families in our local community.

Congratulations to the Terracon team, who earned 1st place in this year’s tournament.

Boston College & Denison University SWEAT it out in Berkeley County

This March, Berkeley Habitat for Humanity had the incredible opportunity to host two collegiate groups across two separate weeks as part of our Collegiate Challenge Sweat Break 2026. Each week brought new energy, unique experiences, and dedicated students committed to serving our community and advancing Habitat’s mission. Thanks again to Publix Super Market Charities for their involvement and support!

Week One: Boston College

We were excited to welcome Boston College back to Berkeley County for their fifth year in a row! Throughout their week with us, students spent time serving both on site and at the ReStore, while also learning from Habitat staff, homeowners, and community partners.

Throughout the week, these students:

Volunteered with Will in our ReStore by transporting shelving, pricing merchandise, organizing the sales floor, and assembling furniture
Served on site at 215 Hutchinson Lane by installing sod and shutters, completing porch trim-out, touching up paint, and prepping final areas for the Hutchinson Lane Project and upcoming sidewalk concrete pour
Began porch work on 217 Hutchinson Lane
Heard from inspiring speakers and Habitat partners including Will (ReStore Assistant Manager), Charles (Board Member, Pinnacle Financial Partners), Stephanie (homeowner), Tony (Board Member, DuPont), and Rebecca (Self-Help Federal Credit Union)
Enjoyed sponsored lunches from Ms. Rin and FPMC, Chick-fil-A, Firehouse Subs, and Swig & Swine
Explored the Lowcountry while enjoying sunshine and warmer weather

Boston College students once again brought an incredible spirit of service, leadership, and enthusiasm, making a lasting impact during their week with Berkeley Habitat.

Week Two: Denison University

The following week, we welcomed students from Denison University for their Sweat Break experience. While their daily schedule differed, the impact remained just as meaningful as students split time between the ReStore, active build sites, and professional development opportunities.

Time spent at the ReStore cleaning, organizing, and pricing merchandise while learning about Habitat operations and teamwork alongside Will
Work completed on multiple Habitat homes including painting, cleaning, final home details, laying sod, beginning vinyl siding, and preparing 215 Hutchinson Lane for closing and the upcoming Home Dedication

Breaking Ground on a Stronger Future: Berkeley Habitat Mission Center

On March 25, 2026, Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County marked a major milestone with the official Groundbreaking Ceremony for the new Berkeley Habitat Mission Center. This long-anticipated project represents an investment not only in infrastructure, but in the families, volunteers, and communities we serve throughout Berkeley County.

A Day of Purpose and Partnership

The ceremony brought together community leaders, partners, supporters, and Habitat families to celebrate the beginning of a space that will strengthen our mission for years to come. President and CEO George Druyos welcomed guests and shared an overview of the project, highlighting how the Mission Center will support Habitat’s growing programs and operational needs.

The program reflected the heart of Habitat’s work. Remarks from Board Chair Libby Roerig reinforced Habitat’s mission and role in Berkeley County, while local leadership offered words of encouragement and partnership. Greetings from Gregory Habib, Mayor of Goose Creek, and Johnny Cribb, Berkeley County Supervisor, underscored the importance of collaboration in addressing housing needs across the region.

Statewide and philanthropic partners also shared their support, including Habitat South Carolina and the Coastal Community Foundation, emphasizing the broader impact this Mission Center will have on housing stability and community development.

Firming the Foundation Together

One of the most meaningful moments of the ceremony was the recognition of partner families, symbolically “firming the foundation” of the Mission Center. Their presence served as a powerful reminder that this project exists because of and for the families who partner with Habitat on their journey to affordable homeownership.

The ceremony concluded with the official groundbreaking, marking the start of construction on a facility that will serve as a hub for Habitat’s staff, volunteers, programs, and community partners.

Built Through Collaboration

The Berkeley Habitat Mission Center is made possible through the expertise of dedicated partners, including TUPCO Inc., ADC Engineering, Allied Consulting Engineers, Earthsource Engineering, and GJS Architecture. Their collaboration helps ensure that this Mission Center will be built on a strong foundation of quality, sustainability, and shared purpose.

As we break ground, we look ahead with gratitude and excitement for what this new space will make possible. The Berkeley Habitat Mission Center will expand our capacity to serve, bring people together, and continue building strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter.

A Mother’s Determination and a Family’s Dream

For Jahmoni Brown , home has always meant more than a roof. It has meant safety, accessibility, and stability for her children. As a devoted single mother caring for children with unique medical and developmental needs, Jahmoni spent years navigating housing that could not fully support her family. Tight spaces and limited accessibility made everyday life more challenging than it should be.

Through faith, perseverance, and partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County, Jahmoni continued working toward a future where her children could grow, feel secure, and thrive. That dream became a reality this week.

A Celebration of Home and Hope

Yesterday, friends, volunteers, and community partners gathered in Moncks Corner on Hutchinson Lane to celebrate the Brown Family Home Dedication. The ceremony was filled with joy, prayer, and heartfelt gratitude as the Brown family officially received the keys to their new home.

Designed with accessibility and comfort in mind, the home provides the space and features needed to support daily life with dignity. The dedication served as a powerful reminder that when a community comes together, lives are changed and futures are strengthened.

Playhouse Project 2025

The 5th Annual Playhouse Project took place on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at the Lowe’s Distribution Center on Daniel Island. In continued partnership with Lowe’s Home Improvement, Berkeley Habitat, together with fellow local affiliates, once again joined forces to build and deliver custom playhouses for children across the tri-county community - this year celebrating our most playhouses yet with 40 total, and over 400 volunteers between all of the affiliates.

We remain deeply appreciative of Lowe’s for their dedication and preparation leading up to this year’s event, and we extend a special thank-you to the Lowe’s who volunteered onsite, lending their energy, skill, and enthusiasm to support every team throughout the day. Their commitment helped make this year’s project our most impactful yet.

A Day on the Water for a Worthy Cause

On Friday, October 3rd, anglers from across the Lowcountry gathered at Cypress Gardens Boat Landing for Berkeley Habitat’s second annual Castin’ For a Cause Fishing Tournament. The event, held in partnership with Creekside Bassmasters, brought together passionate fishermen and community supporters, all united by one mission: helping provide affordable housing opportunities in Berkeley County.

The weather couldn’t have been better for a morning on the water. With 30 boat entries, friendly competition filled the air as participants cast their lines in hopes of reeling in the winning catch. Thanks to Creekside Bassmasters, every weigh-in was conducted with fairness and integrity.

As the weigh-ins wrapped up, participants enjoyed delicious food and refreshments at the Caster’s Cookout, provided by Music Man BBQ and included with registration. Guests also had the chance to win great raffle prizes, adding to the excitement of the day. Congratulations to Chad and Brandon, who claimed first place and big fish honors, a well-earned victory on a beautiful day dedicated to building brighter futures for local families.

Kristina Young’s Home Dedication: A Dream Come True

On Friday morning on August 22nd in Moncks Corner, Kristina Young and her children officially received the keys to their brand-new Habitat for Humanity home on Hutchinson Lane. For Kristina, a hardworking single mother, the moment marked the end of years spent living in a converted garage and the beginning of a new chapter filled with stability, hope, and opportunity.

Despite working full time, the high cost of housing left Kristina with few options. “Even though I work full time and I’ve got kids, I was sort of losing hope that I would ever be able to afford to buy my own home,” she shared on her Live5 News interview . That hope returned when she partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County. Through the program’s requirements of sweat equity, ReStore hours, and financial literacy classes, Kristina not only helped build her home but also gained the tools to thrive as a new homeowner.

“It feels really rewarding… I’m definitely more of a part of the home since I put in a lot of my own time and work,” she said. More than anything, Kristina is excited for her children to finally have space of their own: “I’m so excited for my kids to have their own room. I’m excited to cook in my own kitchen. But mainly, I’m excited that my kids will have their own space to be themselves and have their own areas.”

Unlocking Homeownership: Realtors® Housing Opportunities Fund & Coastal Community Foundation

The Realtors® Housing Opportunities Fund (RHOF) — an endowed initiative created in 2003 by the Charleston Trident Association of Realtors® and administered by the Coastal Community Foundation — has empowered affordable housing organizations across Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester counties. RHOF has distributed over $1 million in grants, typically ranging from $3,500 to $5,000 per award.

Palmetto Life has become a visible partner in raising awareness for RHOF and amplifying its impact—most recently in a video feature (dated July 30, 2025) spotlighting the partnership between RHOF and CCF on Palmetto Life’s site, helping inform viewers how charitable contributions directly support affordable housing efforts.

Projects like Hutchinson Lane stand as physical proof of what collaborative philanthropy can accomplish: resilient neighborhoods, a stronger nonprofit ecosystem, and permanent affordable homeownership. Through the strong support of CCF on Hutchinson Lane, we've seen first hand the difference that partnerships and grants like this one can make on the lives of the people around us.

Our 2025 Collegiate Challenge with Boston College, University of Mary Washington, University of Louisville Catholic, Carroll University, Babson College, Denison University, and University of Wisconsin has officially wrapped up! We are so excited to share this alternative spring break (or should we say "sweat break") week with them! Through their work at Mepkin Abbey, Hutchinson Lane, and the Berkeley Habitat ReStore, we have the opportunity to share our mission of what we do at Berkeley Habitiat - changing the lives of the people in our community and provide affordable housing to those in need.

4 Weeks. 7 Colleges/Universities. 60 Students. 8 Staff. 340 ReStore Hours. 940.5 Construction Hours. 192 Hours of Service at Mepkin Abbey. 1 Home Dedication . 2 Homes framed in ICF . 1 Concrete Wall Pour. 1 Home got her lip stick “Vinyl Siding”.

On Friday, March 28th, 2025, Berkeley Habitat hosted its 4th Annual Building Dreams BBQ Bash, and what an incredible night it was! The air was filled with the delicious aroma of barbecue, the sounds of lively entertainment, and the spirit of community as people gathered to support a mission that truly changes lives.

One of the most moving moments of the evening was hearing from Jahmoni Brown and her daughter, who shared their family’s journey. Jahmoni’s life is a testament to the strength of a mother’s love. As the sole caregiver to her three children—one of whom is Autistic and two who are medically complex and nonverbal—Jahmoni has devoted herself to their care. With a rented home that is too small and not accessible for her sons' medical needs, the dream of homeownership seemed impossible.

That changed when Jahmoni was accepted into Berkeley Habitat’s Homeownership Program. Through this opportunity, she and her children will soon have a home that accommodates their needs, offering them stability, comfort, and the space they so desperately need. As Jahmoni shared, "My kids will now have the space and opportunity to move freely throughout our home without complication. This means so much to us! I thank God and Berkeley Habitat for allowing us to receive this blessing."

Jahmoni’s story is just one example of the transformative power of affordable housing. Through the generosity of our community, Berkeley Habitat continues to create opportunities for families to thrive. Jahmoni’s Story: A Journey of Love, Determination, and Hope

Jahmoni’s life has always revolved around caring for her three children, but the challenges she faces daily are unlike those of most parents. Her daughter is Autistic and her two sons are medically complex, nonverbal, and require total care, relying on her for everything from basic needs to extensive therapies and ongoing medical appointments. As their sole caregiver, Jahmoni has dedicated herself entirely to their well-being, and while this love and devotion is unwavering, it has also meant that she has been unable to work outside the home.

For the last four years, Jahmoni has been renting a three-bedroom house that has become more than cramped. The limited space in their non accessible home makes it difficult to meet her sons' specialized needs. The boys share a bedroom and the halls are crowded with medical equipment and supplies. Every inch of the home is filled with the daily challenges of her children’s care.

Jahmoni never imagined that homeownership would be a possibility for her. With the financial strain of providing care, the children’s disability checks are what sustains the family, covering basic daily expenses but leaving little room for anything more. The idea of owning a home, a place where she and her children could live comfortably and safely, felt like an impossible dream. She says, "What Habitat means for my family is stability, comfort, and a place to call home. My kids will now have the space and opportunity to move freely throughout our home without complication. This means so much to us! I thank God and Berkeley Habitat for allowing us to receive this blessing."

Affordable Housing and Heartfelt Gratitude

When Jahmoni was accepted into the Homeownership Program, she felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude. The new home would not only offer more space, but it would also provide an accessible environment, giving each of her children their own room and creating a safe and comfortable space for all of their medical equipment and supplies. This home is a dream come true and will make daily life easier for Jahmoni and her children, offering the space and accommodations necessary for their well-being.

Jahmoni's story is a powerful testament to the resilience of a mother’s love, the importance of community, and the life-changing impact that accessible, affordable housing can have.

Kristina's Journey: A Story of Resilience and Hope

Kristina's life has been anything but easy. Growing up in the foster care system, she faced a series of challenges that most people can’t even imagine. As she entered adulthood, the obstacles didn’t get any easier. Kristina found herself facing homelessness, unsure of where the next step would lead. Yet, through it all, she never gave up on herself or her dreams for a better future.

In 2017, Kristina made a life-changing decision: she was determined to turn her life around for the sake of her three children, ages 16, 10, and 6. She knew that the key to creating a better life for her family lay in homeownership. Kristina’s drive to break free from the cycle of instability and provide her children with the stability they deserved became the fire that fueled her every step forward.

Homeownership Represents Safety for Her Family

Today, Kristina and her children are living in a small, uninsulated garage at a family member’s home. It’s not ideal, and it’s certainly not where Kristina envisioned raising her kids, but she remains grateful for having a roof over their heads. The cramped space, though far from comfortable, has become their home—one filled with love and resilience. But Kristina knows this is just a temporary situation, one that will change once she achieves her goal of homeownership.

For Kristina, homeownership represents more than just owning a house—it’s about creating a safe, stable environment for her children to grow up in. A home of their own would offer them the security they’ve never had and give Kristina the peace of mind she’s longed for. It would allow her to provide her children with a place to call their own, a place where they can build memories and feel truly settled. She says, " Because of Habitat for Humanity I will be able to finally give my boys their own home and own space to be themselves. I am very proud of all the hard work it's taken to get me here and blessed that my boys have gotten to see me work hard to make our dreams happen. My middle child, Atticus, is especially excited to have his own room to decorate and get away from his brothers (haha)!"

Her journey is a testament to the power of resilience, and it’s a powerful reminder that no matter how difficult life’s circumstances may be, the strength to change your story is within reach. In the heart of Berkeley County, our community thrives on resilience, hope, and collaboration. Through our latest project on Hutchinson Lane, we are not just building houses; we are creating opportunities for individuals to achieve stability and independence. Today, we celebrate a significant milestone—welcoming Stephanie into her new home!

A Journey of Determination

Stephanie's story is one of perseverance and unwavering determination. Adopted at a young age, she grew up in a large, loving family with 18 siblings. From an early age, she learned the value of hard work and resilience from her parents, who instilled in her the belief that she could achieve anything she set her mind to. For the past 14 years, Stephanie has lived in a supported residential program for individuals with disabilities. Her first major goal was to gain independence by obtaining her driver’s license and purchasing a car, a challenge she tackled head-on and accomplished in 2017.

With that success behind her, Stephanie set her sights on an even bigger dream—homeownership. However, financial barriers made this goal seem out of reach. Determined not to let obstacles stand in her way, she reached out to Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County for assistance.

A Dream Realized

Stephanie’s application was met with excitement and support from our team. Through our homeownership program and the generosity of our community, she was able to begin her journey toward owning a safe, stable home. As the Hutchinson Lane Project took shape, so did Stephanie’s dream of independence and security. Her story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the transformative impact of affordable housing initiatives.

Dedication and Thanks

Stephanie’s journey to homeownership was celebrated with a heartfelt Home Dedication Ceremony, bringing together community members, supporters, and local leaders to mark this joyous occasion. The event began with a warm welcome from George Druyos, President & CEO, followed by an inspiring invocation led by Felicia Walker of Unity Bay. April Elswick, Construction Project Manager, took a moment to recognize the dedicated individuals and community partners who played a vital role in bringing this project to life. Attendees were honored to hear from Thomas Hamilton Jr., Mayor of Moncks Corner, who spoke about the significance of affordable housing and the positive impact it has on the community. Brian Davis, Family Services Manager, presented Stephanie with a special Family Services recognition, highlighting her perseverance and dedication throughout the homeownership process. The most touching moment of the ceremony came when Stephanie herself shared heartfelt words about her journey, expressing gratitude for the support she received. The event concluded with closing remarks from George Druyos, reminding everyone of the collective power of community, generosity, and determination in making homeownership dreams a reality.

Playhouse Project 2024

The 4th annual Playhouse Project was held on Saturday, December 7th at the Lowe’s Distribution Center on Daniel Island. In partnership with Lowe’s Home Improvement, Berkeley Habitat along with the other local affiliates came together to provide playhouses for children in need in the tri-county area. We are so grateful for Lowe’s and their hard work preparing for this event as well as the Lowe's Heroes who were onsite helping teams today.

One standout partner who has been with us every step of the way is the First Presbyterian Church of Moncks Corner. Their dedication and generosity have been instrumental in helping us achieve our goals and make a real difference in the lives of those we serve.

Collegiate Challenge Partners

Over the years, First Presbyterian has supported us through countless events and contributions. Thanks to their efforts, we've been able to house and feed hundreds of college students participating in our Collegiate Challenge program. Students from all over the country have the opportunity to come down for their Spring Break (or as we like to call “Sweat Break”) to our community of Berkeley County and make a difference in the lives around them. This program not only provides students with valuable hands-on experience in construction and community service but also fosters a spirit of giving and camaraderie that extends far beyond the worksite. We would like to give a special thanks to all the men and women from First Presbyterian of Moncks Corner who give of their time and resources to make things happen.

Henry Bonner Offering

First Presbyterian's commitment to monthly giving and their generous Henry Bonner offering have provided us with the financial stability needed to plan and execute our projects. Their ongoing support ensures that we can continue to build homes for families in need, creating a ripple effect of positive change throughout our community.

Henry Bonner born 1924 in McClellanville, SC - WWII veteran, graduated from Erskine College, earned his Masters from UNC - Chapel Hill and also studied at USC. He had a long and distinguished career in public education. Serving as a coach, teacher, principal, and later Superintendent of Berkeley County Schools from 1959 - 1989. Henry E. Bonner Elementary School in Macedonia is named in his honor. He retired right before Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Henry did not rest in retirement. He became active in many endeavors in the community and chaired the Habitat for Humanity effort in Berkeley County. Henry died July 3, 2007. Every February, First Presbyterian of Moncks Corner honors his legacy by inviting a Habitat family to come share their story with the FPMC family; they also do a memorial offering for their Henry Bonner Fund created to honor his vital influence on Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County and the difference it continues to make in our community.

Welcome Home, Clayton Family!

We are thrilled to welcome the Clayton family to their new home! After facing numerous challenges over the past few years, Martin and Novella Clayton, along with their three boys, finally have a safe and comfortable place to call their own. This momentous occasion is a testament to their resilience, hard work, and unwavering determination.

Overcoming Obstacles

In August 2020, Novella underwent open heart surgery, which prevented her from working full-time. Shortly after her surgery, the family received the surprise news of Novella's high-risk pregnancy with their third child. This further complicated their financial situation, leading them to move into a relative’s two-bedroom, dilapidated home in an unsafe neighborhood. Despite these hardships, the Claytons remained grateful for the shelter they had.

Thanks to Novella’s recovery and her return to work, and Martin's dedication, the couple managed to balance their schedules to care for their children. Their relentless effort enabled them to qualify for our homeownership program. Novella shared her joy, saying, “The day we got the news we are going to be homeowners, I cried; all I could say was thank you God, we did it! We will finally have a place that is ours and our boys can be in a safe environment. You guys are a blessing, not only to my family, but to other families out there.”

Heartfelt Gratitude to Our Supporters

Stephanie's childhood was marked by the joyful chaos of a large family. Adopted at a young age, Stephanie was raised in a home with 18 siblings. Here she learned the importance of resilience and perseverance from her parents, who worked tirelessly to provide for their family. Stephanie's father taught her many life skills with the hope she would one day live on her own. For the last 13 years, Stephanie has lived in a supported residential program for individuals with disabilities. Her first goal was to obtain her drivers license and purchase a car. Undeterred by societal barriers, Stephanie accomplished both in 2017. Her next goal was then to become a homeowner. Yet, despite her achievements, the dream of homeownership remained elusive due to financial constraints.

That's when Stephanie reached out to Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County. Stephanie's decision to apply for our assistance stemmed from a desire for stability and independence. Through our support and the collective efforts of the community, Stephanie's dream of owning a home began to take shape. As we spearhead the Hutchinson Lane project, Stephanie's story serves as a testament to the transformative impact of affordable housing initiatives. Introducing the Clayton Family

Meet the Claytons! Martin, Novella, and their three boys are our next partner family!

The Claytons have conquered one hurdle after another over the past few years as they have done all they can to keep their spirits high. In August 2020, Novella underwent open heart surgery, preventing her from working full-time. A few months after her surgery, Novella and Martin were both blessed and surprised with the pregnancy of their third child. Due to her high-risk pregnancy, Novella could not return to work. Like many Americans, the Claytons did their best to persevere with skyrocketing inflation and cost of living. They were eventually forced to move into a family member’s two-bedroom dilapidated home located in an unsafe neighborhood. Despite the many challenges, the Claytons have been thankful to have a roof over their heads.

Novella has since been able to return to work. She and Martin work opposite schedules, so they can take care of and meet the needs of their boys. Their hard work and determination made it possible for them to qualify for our homeownership program. Novella stated, “The day we got the news we are going to be homeowners, I cried; all I could say was thank you God, we did it! We will finally have a place that is ours and our boys can be in a safe environment. You guys are a blessing, not only to my family, but to other families out there.”

Welcome Home, Furtick Family!

This journey has been a long time coming for Genise Furtick and her children. After being initially denied in the Homeowner Selection Process due to not meeting income requirements, Genise found another job, reapplied, and was later selected to be given her own home.

When the whole world shut down due to a pandemic, her house-building process was put on hold. When we were finally able to restart the process, it had already been two years since her process began. With the assistance of The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association , Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County was able to build the first Habitat insulated concrete forms (ICF) house in South Carolina. Through this energy-efficient infrastructure and gift of solar panels, Genise can confidently move into her new home without the worry of a high energy bill. Here we are, almost three years later, welcoming the Furtick Family to their new home on Hutchinson Lane!

Behind the Build with NRMCA and Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County

Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County partnered with The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association’s (NRMCA) Build with Strength Coalition to construct a new affordable, low carbon home in Moncks Corner utilizing insulating concrete forms (ICFs), a sustainable, noncombustible concrete building system that reduces upfront construction expenses while maximizing the structure’s durability and energy performance to save homeowners long-term costs on utilities and insurance.

Berkeley County comes together as a Community

Community members, volunteers, local leaders, and media were invited to a “Behind the Build” event November 22nd on the project site on Wall Street in Moncks Corner to celebrate the progress made and meet the many people and partners who have helped bring these homes to life. We would like to give a special thanks to several NRMCA members who have donated and / or discounted materials to support this build- including, Knight’s Redi-Mix, Concrete & Materials Placement, Nudura, Tremco, and Carolinas Ready Mixed Concrete Association (CRMCA) for their generous support and donation in our Hutchinson Lane Project and builds moving forward.

The event featured remarks from local leaders, a guided hard-hat tour of the home, and a “block signing ceremony” where attendees had a chance to write well wishes and blessings for the Habitat family on the ICFs that form the walls of the home. Importantly, the event offered an opportunity to meet and celebrate with Genise Furtick, the future Habitat homeowner, who is scheduled to move in with her children in the spring of 2023.

A Bright Future for Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County

Founded in 1990, in the wake of the devastation caused by Hurricane Hugo, Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County has built over 44 new homes and repaired hundreds of residences for low and very low-income families. This build represents the first Habitat Berkeley home to be built with ICFs, a resilient construction system that reduces potential damages caused by natural disasters.

Everyone has the basic right to affordable housing, and Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County has committed ourselves to making that happen. World Habitat Day is held on the first Monday of October every year as the kick off to Urban October. Whether you are able to donate your time through volunteering with us, or give a financial donation , we thank you for your support.

According to UN Habitat website , “Urban October was developed to raise awareness, promote participation, generate knowledge and engage the international community in creating a better urban future.” Throughout the month of October, we encourage our community to engage in activities, events, and discussions that promote our mission with Habitat for Humanity.

Through affordable homeownership opportunities, financial education, advocacy efforts, and neighborhood empowerment programs, Berkeley Habitat transforms families, revitalizes neighborhoods, and is working together to build a stronger community. Strategically bringing together public and private funding, community leadership and vision, and thousands of volunteers—we will break the cycle of poverty and transform our communities.

The United Nations claims that “The pandemic and recent conflicts have reversed years of progress made in the fight against poverty resulting in the emergence of newly poor people—those who would have exited poverty in the absence of the pandemic but remain poor, and those who have fallen into poverty on account of the pandemic.” Through your donations, we are able to be on the front-line in our community of Berkeley County and build affordable housing for those who need it most.

As the new season sets in, we are so happy to announce both the Evans Family and Harrison Family as official homeowners! We are so thankful to have seen the Lord’s provision as He’s been so faithful over these past two years, providing Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County the resources to complete these two homes through the pandemic.

The Harrison Family

On August 20th, we, along with Tia Harrison, family, and friends celebrated the dedication of their new home. After her struggles with sickle cell disease, unsafe living conditions, and interruptions in getting her bachelors degree, Tia says, “I am in awe of this year and the things that have happened.” Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County is so thankful for everyone who was involved in the completion of Tia’s new home - a place where she can continue to provide for her family without the worry of an unsafe neighborhood.

The Evans Family

On September 11th, 2022, the Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County team along with Restoration Community Church celebrated the home dedication of the Evans Family. After years of delays and unexpected events, we finally stand with this community in praise of God’s mighty work. The Evans Family are homeowners!

Due to a life-threatening event in his past, Jared has faced significant health restrictions that have, unfortunately at times, interfered with his eligibility to operate a motor vehicle, making it difficult for him to work and to support his family financially. About this, Jared states, “Through this challenge though, Psalms 119:68 shines forth that, no matter what, ‘God is good and does good’.” The Evans are so excited for their girls to have their own space and for their family to be able to continue to minister in their church community.

Habitat for Humanity helps families in need of a decent place to live build strength, stability and independence through affordable housing. Breaking Ground on Hutchinson Lane

Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County held its groundbreaking for the Hutchinson Lane CDBG Project on May 24. This exciting first phase of our affordable housing project was awarded by Berkeley County through the Community Development Block Grant program, funded by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). This project will rebuild Hutchinson Lane in the Wall Street Community of Moncks Corner, adding the infrastructure needed for Berkeley Habitat to build 5-7 homes for families in need of safe, affordable housing. Construction on our first home will begin in July 2022.

Along with HUD, Berkeley County, and the Town of Moncks Corner, we are thankful for those that have partnered with us to support this project and Habitat. This includes Pinnacle Financial Services, Publix Super Markets Charities, Coastal Community Foundation, Weyerhaeuser, GJS Architecture, and Live Oak Consultants.

Celebrating Arbor Day with Berkeley Electric

We are so thankful for the Members of Berkeley Electric Cooperative who participate in the Operation Round Up Program. By rounding up your monthly electric bill to the next dollar, your generosity funds home repairs and community services within the the BEC territory. These funds are administered by the Berkeley Electric Trust Board, whom awarded $10,000 to Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County for our current home build in Moncks Corner! BEC also partnered with Berkeley Habitat and future homeowner Tia Harrison on April 19th to plant an energy saving tree as part of their Arbor Day Program! We appreciate BEC for their continued support!

Saying Goodbye to Krystal

This month marks the end of an 11-year career for Krystal Oliver with Habitat for Humanity. Krystal started out as a volunteer with Habitat at a very young age. She then became a ReStore Associate, promoted to ReStore Manager, and has ended her career with us as our Vice President of Operations. The lives that she has touched and made an impact in cannot begin to be counted. She transformed our ReStore and allowed us to build more homes because of it. Krystal was an integral part of our team and a wonderful leader. She will truly be missed. From all of us at Berkeley Habitat, we wish her nothing but the greatest success in the next chapter of her life. She will always be part of the Habitat family. Congrats Graduate!

Congratulations to future Habitat Homeowner, Tia Harrison, for graduating from Grand Canyon University on April 25, 2022 with a Bachelors of Science in Sociology with an emphasis in Social Work. While earning her degree, Tia, a mother of two teenagers whom works full time, has also been putting in her Habitat Sweat Equity hours and is getting close to the finish line! Tia is an inspiration to her children, family, and community! We are so proud of Tia for her hard work and look forward to seeing all the great things to come for The Harrison Family!

Celebrating our Volunteers

Whether it is working in the ReStore or on a build site, helping in the Administrative Office or at an event, Berkeley Habitat appreciates all of our volunteers who give their time and talents to our mission. We ended our week long celebration with our volunteers with a picnic at the John McCants Veterans Park in Goose Creek! We are grateful for your giving hearts to help others have a decent, affordable place to call home.

Our first BBQ Bash was a success!

Our first Building Dreams BBQ Bash was a success! We raised almost $33,000 for our two current home builds in Hanahan and Moncks Corner! Thank you to our event sponsors: Sumter Utilities, Pinnacle Financial, Northpoint Development, SC Federal Credit Union, and Home Telecom. A huge shout out to the City of Hanahan for the use of the Hanahan Amphitheater, to Swig & Swine for the amazing barbeque and oysters, and to DJ Terry Base for the great music! We appreciate everyone who came out to support our mission to build safe, affordable housing for The Evans and Harrison Families!

Collegiate Challenge "Sweat Break" 2022

3 weeks, 5 colleges, 58 students, 3 Campus Staff, 275 ReStore Volunteer hours, and 1254 Construction Volunteer hours = lots of laughs, many memories, new bonds, and much accomplished in our ReStore and on our two current home builds! Students from Concordia College, Boston College, Catholic University of America, University of South Florida, and Denison volunteered their time during their Spring Break making an impact in our community! Thank you Aldersgate UMC, First Presbyterian Church of Moncks Corner, and Victory Baptist Church for hosting the students. A huge shout out to KFC in Moncks Corner and Goose Creek, Publix, SAJACK Properties, and many other local Habitat volunteers for feeding the students during their time with us! To The Evans Family, Tia Harrison, and Mona Marshall, we appreciate you taking time with the students to share your Habitat Journey!

Homeowner Success

Mortgage Pay off!
LaShawn Simmons and her family applied for the Habitat Homeownership program in November 2001 and closed on thier home in August 2003, making them the 6th homeowner with Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County. LaShawn has been diligent with her payments and recently paid off her mortgage early! Congratulations to LaShawn for this tremendous accomplishment!

Associate's Degree
Sherlle Humphrey's college career was put on hold until she could find affordable housing in a safer community for herself and her daughter. After closing on her Habitat Home in 2017, Sherlle was able to enroll in college and has now graduated from Trident Technical College with her Associate's Degree in Applied Science! Congratulations to Sherlle! We wish you much success!

Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County had a busy and rewarding end of the year. We participated in Days of Caring, the Playhouse Project, and gave back to the community by volunteering with Hope Repair; all while still making progress on the Moncks Corner and Hanahan build sites. Thank you to all of our generous donors and awesome volunteers for making 2021 a success! We look forward to partnering with you in 2022!

Trident United Way - Days of Caring

What can be accomplished in 3 days? From November 17-19, Berkeley Habitat participated in the Trident United Way Days of Caring. Berkeley Habitat ReStore was blessed with over 60 volunteers on site during the 3 days working on bathroom makeovers, striping the parking lot, painting administrative offices, outside clean-up, and more! ADC Engineering , Eastwood Homes , and the Navy NNPTC were full of energy and ideas, and made an impact on what we can provide here at the ReStore for our customers, volunteers, and staff. We appreciate each of them for their time and donations to make each project possible.

Playhouse Project

In December, we teamed up with Charleston, Dorchester, and East Cooper Habitats for our first Playhouse Project! 20 teams built and decorated playhouses for children throughout the Lowcountry. Thank you to Samet Corporation , Google , Peace Church , Philip Simmons JROTC , and the USAF Port Dawgs for their support of this project to bring smiles to children in Berkeley County by giving them the gift of play and "homeownership!" This event would not have been possible without the sponsorship from Lowes Home Improvement who donated the space, materials, staff, and instruction to make this day a success!

Thank you Weyerhaeuser Giving Fund for awarding Berkeley Habitat with a $4,500 grant towards lumber and porch materials for new home construction happening now in the Wall Street neighborhood of Moncks Corner.

Weyerhaeuser grows, harvests, and regrows forests throughout North America. The Weyerhaeuser Giving Fund supports U.S. and Canadian communities where they have a significant presence or business interest. These communities range from rural to metropolitan, each with unique priorities and needs. The local giving fund advisory committee recommendations from here in SC were instrumental in securing the grant.

Publix

Thank you Publix Super Markets Charities for awarding Berkeley Habitat with a $6,000 grant from the foundation! This funding will go towards the new home construction happening now in Hanahan.

“A home often represents stability and independence on one’s life. In what has been a difficult year, there are far too many people in the country struggling with housing instability,” said Executive Director Kelly Williams-Puccio. The foundation remains committed to doing good for those in need. Publix Charities is a longtime supporter of Habitat for Humanity. Last year, Publix Charities supported 113 Habitat affiliates across the Southeast.

As Publix now plans to build two new locations here in Berkeley County, we say welcome and thanks for the continuing strong support!

Meet the Harrison Family

We are thrilled to announce our 44th Habitat home will be for Tia Harrison and her two children. Their new home will be a foundation for long-term growth and stability.

Tia feels blessed to have this opportunity to provide her children with a safe, decent, affordable house. She is excited her family will be close to Community's Hope Impact Center which provides many great programs to local residents.

Over the next few weeks our volunteer schedule will be opening up so be sure to watch for upcoming build opportunities. A donation today will bring Tia one step closer to her dream of owning a home.

Saying Goodbye

It is with mixed emotions announcing that our long-time Construction Manager, Jennings Jackson Jr., will be building his last two homes with Berkeley Habitat over the next few months.

Jennings has been part of our Habitat family for over 10 years and has constructed over 20 houses, a food pantry, bus shelters, and a Community Center.

Join us on our next two builds as we bring new hope to families in need and celebrate the success Jennings has brought to our affiliate.

PlayHouse Project

On Saturday, December 4th, Habitat for Humanity Affiliates from around the Lowcountry are hosting the Playhouse Project event.

The event is made of up teams that will be building a playhouse to be delivered to a child in time for the Christmas season while raising money for Habitat for Humanity.

Team up with your friends, family, and co-workers to build a playhouse with us or support one of our fundraising teams!

Whatever your project, let us help you with the items you no longer need stay out of our local landfill.

Join us at Coastal Carolina Fair!

The Coastal Carolina Fair returns October 28th-November 7th.

The Exchange Club of Charleston hosts the Coastal Carolina Fair to raise funds for charity. Over the past five years, the Exchange Club has provided nearly $15,000 to Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County. Their support has allowed us to build homes, communities, and hope throughout Berkeley County.

Home Builders Blitz 2019 – A Game Changer

September 21st might be just a normal day for many, but for Melido Ferguson and her family, it’s gonna be a game changer.

Why?

Thanks to Hunter Quinn Homes , Melido will be handed the keys to her first home in Moncks Corner, SC. After a lengthy application process with our Habitat team, her commitment to the requirements, she signed on the line and will soon be a homeowner.

We are both blessed and excited to partner with Will Herring, Founder and CEO of Hunter Quinn Homes and his team of trade partners for our 2019 Home Builder’s Blitz. It’s not every day we come across organizations that are willing to build an entire home for Berkeley Habitat much less one that is up for the challenge of building it in 60 hours. After meeting with Will and his team, there is no doubt that if anyone can pull this off, it’s the Hunter Quinn Homes team. All have been engaged, supportive and with a genuine desire to help and support our community. Indeed, a blessing for all involved. Will has recognized the growing need for affordable housing in our community and is taking action.

What is Builder’s Blitz

It’s an opportunity for a builder in the community to recognize the need for decent and affordable housing and put forth the resources and effort to build a home in 60 hours for a family in need. Yes, 60 hours. This could only be possible with the leadership team at Hunter Quinn Homes and their trusted contractors that they partner with to get the job done.

We know the work that goes into building a home, but imagine the tremendous amount of work, time, and talent that will go into building this home in only 60 hours. It’s not only 60 hours to physically complete on site, but it’s many more to prep, get the contractors organized and be ready to hit the ground running on September 16th.

Why we do it?

To put God’s love into action. To help those in our community who are looking for a better life for their family. To help those willing to put in the sweat equity, education hours, length application process, in order to obtain a home for their family.

Building Community

1. a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common.

2. a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.

Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County was blessed to be part of a team of individuals and organizations that transformed the corner of Cooper and Grace Streets in Moncks Corner. Old buildings that eventually became invaded by crime and mother nature were now coming down and a new community center was about to be constructed. This center was the concerted effort between Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County, The Wall Street Community and the partners and supporters of the community such as Grace Reformed Episcopal Church.

As of today, many ideas are still being discussed within the community regarding play areas for kids, covered school bus stops, a community store, and a community garden. These ideas are paired with hopes that we can bring all of these to life in order to strengthen the existing bond. This collaboration between all of us is a true example of what “community” means. I firmly believe it is the singular answer to transforming not only the community but the town, the county, the state and our country.

Creating and Supporting Community Counts

Fast forward to the beginning of summer when many new programs are now in place to support community needs.

One neighbor caring for and helping another neighbor.

One church engaging and supporting a community.

One non-profit engaging and supporting a community and a church to help with the community’s vision.

Communities coming together for the sole purpose of utilizing the assets and skills that are at the core of what makes a community.

Community’s and organizations working with individual partners and corporate partners to support and bring attention to the benefits of creating a strong community and assisting in the growth of those assets.

Many partners believing and supporting the community’s vision and believing that together, we can make a difference.

Our Prayer

As one fiscal year ends and another begins we will review our lessons learned and use them as learning experiences as we take them to the next build site. We are optimistic that the foundation we have laid over the last several years is solid and many wonderful things will continue to grow and nourish those that receive the benefits.

It is our prayer that this community center will be the catalyst for surrounding communities and for inspiring generations of people who will pass through its doors.

The Affordable Housing Crisis - It Matters

Affordable Housing Crisis

The affordable housing market is in a crisis of epic proportions. For many years, affordable housing only applied to families or individuals with low income levels which were defined by HUD. What was considered making a modest living a few years ago, no longer provides you with enough income to live in a decent apartment or home, much less near a large metropolitan area.

Consider this…

A college student graduates and takes an entry level position making $13 an hour. That equates to $1,577 per month take home pay after taxes. The average one-bedroom apartment within 15 miles of downtown Charleston is $850 per month and that is just rent. This number doesn’t include utilities, groceries or gas for their car to travel the 30 miles per day to get back and forth to work. Not to mention car insurance, property taxes and/or a car payment. More than 50% of his/her income would go towards housing. This is a dynamic that is extremely difficult to overcome and can easily perpetuate itself from generation to generation. I used a college student for this example. Now, imagine a single mom with 3 children making the same wage. We see this on a regular basis at Habitat for Humanity Berkeley County. These individuals end up working 2-4 jobs and are unable to spend any time with their children. Furthermore, at the end of every month they have zero leftover and are always behind with no hope to catch up financially.

This is where affordable housing initiatives as well as non-profits like Habitat for Humanity Berkeley County can step in and change lives in an instant.

Facts:

· Our “qualified” homeowners will live in a brand new 1,100-1,300 square foot home.

· Our homeowners have a 25-year interest free mortgage for roughly $500 a month.

· The Habitat homes are Energy Star rated which makes the electric bill averages less than $100.

· Our homeowners will put in 350 sweat equity hours to help make their dream home come to fruition.

Think about the amount of money saved that can now be used to live a life without the stress of 2-4 jobs. Think about the mom who can stop working third shift to pay rent and can now be home with her children for dinner and nighttime rituals.

These facts may not seem like a big deal to some, but to many in our community and many other communities in the U.S., these Habitat for Humanity facts can and will change lives. Not just one life, but everyone living in the household because now they are not so much in survival mode, but thankful mode. These helpless and sometimes homeless individuals will now be strong contributors to our community.

We need to do all we can to support affordable housing initiatives as well as non-profits like Habitat for Humanity Berkeley County in order to make resources available to make the generational impacts on the families that live in our community and deserve a decent place to live. Our Habitat families are looking for a hand up and not a hand out. Will you offer them one?

Volunteers Make the World a Better Place

Volunteers Making a Difference in Our Community

What is volunteering? Ultimately, it is the sacrifice of one’s time to serve and support a cause or people in need. Personally, I feel it is the most selfless act of service that a person can offer another individual or organization. The gift of time, which is one of the most precious commodity’s all of us have to offer, is a sign of a person's absolute desire to be helpful in any way they can without expectation of anything in return.

Volunteering is the biggest reason Habitat for Humanity Berkeley County continues to thrive and provide families in need with affordable housing.

How does volunteering benefit HFH Berkeley County?

Without the support of volunteers, we could not build homes for those in need. The cost per home without volunteer support is an additional $30,000. Outsourcing this labor is very expensive and we are at the mercy of the contractor. This also means that for almost every 2 homes built with paid labor, we could build a third home by replacing with volunteers. A stat worth noting.

Volunteers make a tremendous impact on our communities. Beautification days, wellness support of the elderly, transportation, Habitat for Humanity ReStore, etc. are all very important activities that without volunteers, the community would have to relinquish. Our ReStore is a vital lifeline for raising money to build homes and support our communities. We need volunteers in our ReStore to help with organization of inventory, work at the register, receive donations, assist customers, and help with special events at the store. Without volunteers, we would need to hire people in order to support these needs.

Volunteers are the backbone of what Habitat for Humanity was built upon and what it stands for today. People serving and helping others out of pure love and kindness for each other. We could not be more thankful and proud of the people who chose to support us on a regular basis.

A few examples of volunteers making an impact at HFH Berkeley County

· We had over 200 volunteers helping build the neighborhood Community’s HOPE Impact Center. Impressive.

· 189 women are currently signed up for our Women’s Build Week – this is crazy good, but we still have room for more a few more.

· Mr. Floyd is a 93-year-old Veteran and has been with our HFH Berkeley County family for over 6 years. The perfect example of a giving heart.

We pray consistently that others will witness the blessings received by those who give their time and talent. That they will be drawn to our mission and seek to help us provide our community with affordable housing. Providing a first-time homebuyer with the keys to their new home brings great joy to all involved. Understanding your role as a volunteer and knowing that you helped bring this dream to fruition is a feeling of peace and joy that is unrivaled.

We thank and are thankful for each and every volunteer who has ever supported us and we look forward to those who feel inspired to join us in support of our mission to serve the needs of our community.

Women Build Week – Making an Impact for Women in Our Community

Women Build Week

Women Build Week – Making an Impact for Women in our Community.

Twenty-seven years in the making and still going strong! Habitat for Humanity’s National Women Build Week is an annual event that continues to grow significantly each year. “The program invites women to devote at least one day to help families build strength, stability and independence through housing.” This build program shines the spotlight on how tough owning a home can be if you are a woman and it gives other women the opportunity to help make a change. A quick Google search solidified the fact that living in poor housing affects more women than men.

Why Women Build?

· Women empowering other women. The Berkeley Habitat Women Build allows women to come together with other women to help build a stronger and safer community. Community is everything.

· Help a family in our community receive safe and affordable housing.

· Help children thrive and live a better more secure life.

This year is even more special as we have set aside two full weeks on our construction sites for women to come out and make a real change for other women. It is a wonderful time to be a part of this event with us as we will have 3 houses under construction at the same time in various stages of construction. If you are not in the construction industry, this will be a great time to learn a new skill! Still 60 days out and the interest and feedback has been tremendous!

How can you participate?

· Donate your time and talent. We need it and so does our community.

· Donate building materials. We aren’t picky, but we do have a list of needed items!

· We need some cool “thank you’ gifts for all of the women who will be swinging a hammer.

· Can’t be there? No problem. You can always make a cash donation geared toward these two weeks.

You Get What You Give

Habitat For Humanity - Our mission is life-changing

I never paid much attention, nor did I read the articles about those leaving corporate America to find something more fulfilling. I had been in the construction industry for many years and never gave a thought to leaving this field.

Fast forward. As I began the journey of finding my faith and purpose I also began the journey of not being satisfied with my career and where I was headed. I now look back and understand that all of the good, bad and ugly was intentional and that GOD had bigger and more purposeful plan for me. The two were packaged together for a reason. The cliché “ you get what you give ” was really starting to resonate with me and then the epiphany hit, and I knew it was time to look for a career that carried more meaning and was Christ centered.

Fast forward again. I am thankful for the journey that got me to HFH as it taught me to trust GOD and be patient. I give thanks every single day that I am here fulfilling not only my personal mission but the Habitat mission as well. While I no longer sell a product, I continue to use that skill to educate many on the benefits of working with Habitat and why our mission is both crucial and necessary.

What makes our mission life-changing?

“Habitat works with families to help them acquire the access, skills and financial education necessary for them to be successful homeowners. By partnering with us, families seize the opportunity and possibility that decent, affordable housing represents. Through shelter, we empower. We build strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter.”

My favorite thing about Habitat for Humanity is working on anything that moves us in the direction of serving more families in need such as:

· Building new relationships with potential donors – critical for us to succeed to help others.

· Working with existing and meeting new volunteers – seeing their passion for our mission.

· Working with our outstanding Board of Directors – we have an incredibly smart and engaged BoD.

· Working with a great staff that continues to expand their capacity and embrace growth in order to better serve our community.

What is our role at Habitat?

1. We are a HOME BUILDER

2. We are a LOAN ORIGINATOR

3. We are a MORTGAGE HOLDER

4. We are a PROPERTY MANAGER

5. We are a RETAIL OUTLET (ReStore) that brings in close to half of our yearly revenue

6. We are a LIFESAVER TO MANY and MANY SAVE US as well

The last 20 months at Habitat for Humanity-Berkeley County have been both a learning experience and a life experience. There is nothing more gratifying than working with a family that is on the cusp of owning their first home. It confirms that there was a bigger purpose for me and I am grateful that I was given the patience to wait for it.

Fulfilling the Berkeley Habitat Mission

Your contribution at any level makes a big difference.

Fulfilling the Habitat for Humanity-Berkeley County mission depends on generous donors and volunteers who commit their time, talent and financial resources to help those in need. We are extremely grateful for those that chose to partner with us and share our enthusiasm and passion for building homes and changing lives.

On January 13th we will celebrate our 34th Home Dedication with Danielle and her family. Without generous donor and volunteer contributions to support our mission, it would be impossible for us to provide affordable homes to families in need that live in our Berkeley County community. We have a lofty goal of building 3 homes and a community center in 2018 and we pray every single day that our budget will allow this to happen. However, building a home is not a cheap endeavor but the return on investment is priceless . We are all familiar with how quickly the $10, $50 and $100 dollars add up month after month as we pay our bills. Now let’s consider how quickly the $1,000, $5,000 and the $10K add up when budgeting for a Habitat home. Here is a short list of expenses (let me stress short list):

Property acquisition $15,000 Home foundation $15,000

Framing & Lumber $10,500 Plumbing $ 8,000

Insulation $ 7,000 HVAC $6,000

A few reasons why we do what we do:

· “Because children who live in homes with leaking roofs, broken windows, rodents, non-functioning heaters or stoves, peeling paint, exposed wiring, or unsafe or unclean environments often experience greater emotional and behavioral problems".

· “Because about 1 in 4 people worldwide live in conditions that harm health, safety, prosperity and opportunities”.

· “We help revitalize neighborhoods. Many local Habitats in the United States partner with residents, community leaders and local groups to revitalize neighborhoods. Sometimes, their efforts include building new homes or doing repairs. In the past three years, local Habitats doing neighborhood revitalization also have participated in more than 7,500 community projects, from renovating community centers to helping build community gardens”. How can you help?

· Volunteer . We need your time and talent both at a worksite and in our ReStore. Work side by side with others to help create a world where everyone has a decent place to live. The gratification of handing over a key to a new home is off the charts. Come be a part of that experience.

· Financial donation. It’s not cheap to build a home but your financial donation helps tremendously, no matter the amount. Have I mentioned corporate matching gifts yet?

My epiphany was about 6 years ago. It was then I discovered that there was a greater meaning and purpose to my life. I began to comprehend that there was a God who loved me for my weaknesses and strengths and who forgave me just for believing and following Him. This moment was life changing.

It was then I began to question my career path and began to feel the need to work towards something more meaningful. I began to pray that God would place the right opportunity in front of me. While running my construction business I met someone who was encouraging me to consider working for a non-profit. Something I had never considered. As if God said here it is, I stumbled upon the Executive Director position at Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County. The position was in line with my construction and management history and was a wonderful mission that mirrored exactly what I believed God was calling me to do. I applied, asked for prayers and the rest is history.

Never in my life had I experienced such an incredible sense of excitement to finally be embarking on fulfilling my purpose and calling. To be involved in a mission that builds hope and unity through the construction of homes and community development was exactly what I was seeking. However, I wanted to begin this journey differently than I had any other. I wanted every part of this mission to be much more relational and caring towards everyone we dealt with and I wanted that same feeling to infect everyone around me and my staff. It was my way of sharing the love and grace that God had and continues to give to me.

Each person on our staff has a genuine concern for the other and will do all they can to support each other for the success of our mission. But it goes further than that. The entire staff now has a personal connection with families and the communities we serve as well as with the volunteers who serve with us. We get to know each other on a level that is much deeper than the business at hand and we share this vision with those that work and build with us. This is what I feel has driven our success over the past year.
A simple and humble start to a new beginning that is filled with the promise of God’s love. A mission whose core value is "to spread the love of Jesus Christ."
