Homeownership Program Selection Process (HPSP)

Important Announcement

Our homeownership program selection period has ended. Be sure to follow us on our social media platforms where we will announce our next open application period when it becomes available.

Please see the steps below concerning the homeownership program selection process:

Step 1: Habitat Homeownership Program Qualifications Self-Assessment

The Self-Assessment will help you to determine if you meet the initial Habitat homeownership eligibility requirements. To begin the self-assessment, click the link below:

Step 2: Housing Need and Willingness to Partner Assessment
As stated above, our homeownership program selection period has ended. However, during the selection period, if you meet the initial program requirements, based upon the completed self-assessment form, you will be provided the ‘Housing Need and Willingness to Partner Assessment’ by our Family Services department by email. Fill out this form and submit it to Berkeley Habitat Family Services no later than the date given by the Habitat family services department. Late submissions may not be accepted.

Step 3: Ability to Pay Assessment

If you meet the program requirements based upon the completed ‘Housing Need and Willingness to Partner Assessment’, you will be provided the ‘Ability to Pay Assessment’ by our Family Services department, and an in-person interview appointment will be scheduled.

The interview appointment will be scheduled two weeks out to give you ample time to complete the form and gather all necessary documents. Remember, all supported documents are required to be submitted with your ‘Ability to Pay Assessment’ form at your appointment time. Be sure to be on-time for your interview appointment.

 Please Note:

  • Children are not permitted to attend the interview appointment. Please make necessary arrangements for child-care.
  • There will be a $25 fee (by money order) which will be collected from you at the interview appointment, which will cover the cost of a 3-bureau credit report pull, background check as well as processing fees.
  • Those who are denied at any time and/or do not meet the program eligibility requirements may be invited to apply again. In such cases, they must once again go through all of the necessary steps to become selected, during the next selection period.

Note:

  • All selected program participants are pre-qualified for a home loan while participating in the homeownership program.
  • Qualifying for a Habitat home loan is contingent upon the successful completion of all Habitat homeownership program requirements.
  • The Homeownership Program Selection Process takes a total of about 3 months on average to complete.
  • Expect the total time from the beginning of the homeownership program to house completion to be 12-18 months.
  • Each home build takes about 6-9 months on average once construction begins.
  • Most builds are completed one-at-a-time.
  • All program participants are responsible for working on the current construction project already in progress until their home construction begins.
  • Habitat for Humanity does not provide immediate housing.
  • All program participants are responsible for their own housing during the duration of the program.
