A Space to Gather Again: Restoring Home and Holiday Traditions for the Hamilton-Brown Family

For more than 30 years, Samuel Brown's home in Goose Creek has been the center of his family's life. It's where he and his late wife raised their family and where countless memories were made.

After her mother passed away in 2014, Celeshia Hamilton moved back home to help care for her father, now 78. Together, they've kept the household going, but life in the home changed dramatically three years ago when a fire destroyed the garage addition. The fire also damaged an old chimney and the adjoining wall, which over time gave way to rot and termites. Unable to repair the damage, Samuel and Celeshia closed off that side of the house and made do with the space that remained.



In the 14 years since losing her mother, the family hasn't hosted a single holiday gathering. The home that once welcomed loved ones simply didn't have the room anymore. Celeshia's greatest hope has been to bring her family back together under one roof.

On September 16, 2026, the community stepped in to make that hope a reality.

As part of the GAF Community Matters Program, Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County partnered with Big Bear Roofing, Hope Repair, GAF, QXO, and Four Seasons at Lakes of Cane Bay to restore the damaged side of the home. Berkeley Habitat and Hope Repair crews tackled the demolition of the old chimney and damaged wall, then repaired the wall so the space could be safely used again. Cyclone Services Pest Control also lent their support to the project, and volunteers were kept fueled throughout the day with lunch generously provided by KFC Goose Creek.

For Celeshia, the new space means more than a repaired home. It means a place to gather again. What she's most excited about is hosting Christmas this year in her new den, complete with what she's already calling her "Christmas tree window." After 14 years, the family will finally have room to celebrate the holidays together at home.

Projects like this are about more than repairing homes. They're about restoring the places where families gather, grow, and make memories. We are so grateful for the opportunity to make a positive impact right here in Goose Creek.
